Masterclass Programme

Wednesday 16th November 2011

The Masterclasses are smaller, interactive sessions that explore the future of workplace and technology.

Stream 1

2.00pm Building FM Capability, Developing People

Over the last 18 months Compass has strengthened its position in the growing FM sector. With over 55,000 employees in the uK, a key challenge now is to understand how to develop existing and future talent in the FM space to match its growth challenges and ensure exceptional service delivery. Working with Asset Skills, one element of that development strategy has been the pilot and implementation of the new level 3 FM Advanced Apprenticeship scheme. Peter will talk through how this programme was introduced into the business, the success of the pilot and why this qualification is now an important part of the FM development plan at Compass.

Peter Collins, Head of Human Resources, Compass Group UK&I

2.40pm Noise in the Workplace

This seminar addresses noise in the workplace. It looks at the effects of increasing noise levels as a result of space economy, and the results achieved following acoustic refurbishment. Looking at various acoustic products, you will learn how they are used to solve different room acoustics problems.

Rosalind Lambert-Parker Acoustician and Audiologist, Acoustics at Work

3.20pm The Office Paradox

Employees, organisations and developers all have conflicting aims for how they create and use office space and new mobile technology is exacerbating the situation. ShCA and Steelcase will paint a picture of a possible future scenario that might resolve this seeming paradox.

Jason Turner, Design Director, Interiors, Swanke Hayden Connell Architects
Zoe Humphries, Senior Workplace Consultant, Steelcase Applied Research & Consulting

4.20pm Living Stages: what can office environments learn from theatre design?

This Masterclass will set out a framework for the language of theatre design to explore how experiential settings using scenery, props, lighting and special effects can help to create a common culture and purpose within organisations. It will report on early work in progress in a study being jointly conducted by Haworth and the Helen Hamlyn Centre for design, rCA, with the aim of challenging the current status quo of dull, uniformly lit, uninspiring workplaces.

Francois Brounais, Regional Managing Director, Haworth Europe
Jeremy Myerson, Director, Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design, RCA

5.00pm What is real Time Working?

Real Time Working is a team based working philosophy that uses information age mobility and virtual working capabilities to harness the energy of teams. Simon will demonstrate the power of RTW with completed projects and work in progress..

Simon Pole, Director of Interior Design, Woods Bagot

Stream 2

2.00pm Do landlords build what tenants want? How big is the divide?

We hope to shed some insight into this topical issue through an informed panel discussion led by 4 eminent industry leaders. They will compare and contrast Heron Tower, Unilever's properties (which focus on agile workplace design) and Rio Tinto's innovative new global HQ. Key areas of comparison will include; sustainability, efficiencies, workplace design, innovation and overall effectiveness of the space for occupation. The Masterclass will focus on the landlords' perception of occupiers' needs against the actual requirements – how can we bridge the gaps?

Polly Plunket-Checkemian – Cushman & Wakefield, Equity Partner - Corporate Occupier & Investor Services (CIS)
Neil Usher – General Manager - Group Property, Rio Tinto
Michelle Pattison – Global Agile Working Director, Unilever
Andrew Burnie - Head of Asset Management, Heron International
Paul Simovic - Director, Kohn Pederson Fox Associates

2.40pm Active Energy Management

Energy is one of the highest expenses for most organizations. In fact, 70% of the electricity is consumed by buildings and approximately up to 50% of this energy is wasted. At our present rate, buildings will be the top emitters of greenhouse gas worldwide by 2025. As a result, the issue of mitigating energy consumption has become a top economic and environmental priority. Join PeopleCube’s Peter Tarca as he examines the value of Active Energy Management practices and the importance of leveraging space utilization analytics to control your facilities’ energy use. You will also learn how Active Energy Management delivers wide-ranging energy consumption visibility that can lead to proactive conservation efforts among building occupiers, helping to further reduce energy expenses and achieve sustainability goals.

Peter Tarca, PeopleCube

3.20pm The world of work has changed forever. Have you changed with it?

We’re all under pressure to do more with less these days. Maintaining a competitive edge means getting every drop of value from your technology, your facilities and your people.

Get insight into the issues, challenges and practical interactive and collaborative technologies that are available today to support a natural way of working and drive real competitive advantage through greater productivity and a reduction in costs, time and travel. We’ll share with you how many of our customers, including bT, o2 and Microsoft, are using these technologies to change the way they work and greatly improve their efficiency.

Sam Baker and Tim Price-Walker, Business Development Managers, Steljes Limited

4.20pm Tablets in the Enterprise

Mobile devices and particularly tablets, are invading our workplace, with a mirage of rich media content apps, such as video conferencing. How do you ensure these devices are allowed on to your network securely? How do you ensure that your users have a great experience?

The days of the network cable are numbered. Join Jason Green, MD, Building Zones, to gain an understanding of how these devices will impact your wireless network.

Jason Green, Managing Director, Building Zones, and Meru Networks
