Rosalyn Dexter

Rosalyn Dexter
Author

Rosalyn Dexter has been involved in architecture and design for over 30 years. After completing her studies in Art and Design, she went on to develop a successful design company creating innovative buildings for the luxury market. With an early interest in the psychology of design and the human experience, while continuing to work on her building projects, she spent much of the last 20 years exploring our neurological response to our environment.

Early on she had investigated diverse arenas both East and West. Prior to easy internet access to science papers she wrote a couple of books on the Eastern approach to environment. In the early 2000s things changed , and as her reputation grew around mind and design, she was invited to design the offices of some leading branders. This was fortuitous for it caused her to delve more deeply into the power of story, that lead to research revealing opiate triggers lining our visual pathway. This sparked a new perspective on the potential power of brand and design. Different to branded products we use or wear, we incubate in our buildings - day in - day out, influencing our soft neural wiring. With our soft wiring, and with opiate triggers affecting our interpretation of what we see, when science later unveiled that our response to an environment’s narrative affects us at the cellular level, the dots that had only been curious ideas, began to connect up. A new approach to design was emerging that took account of the human experience at a new and provocative level .

To create a frame for this Rosalyn needed to understand the subliminal influence of story, so she trained in hypnosis and cognitive neurolinguistics. Slowly she was beginning to grasp something of how the mind bridges the real and the imagined; in a simple and practical way this cognitive work lead her to design concepts that could be purposefully framed to affect us - strategically. What had started out 20 years before as an idea was proving insightful.

When Epigeneticists found that our environment could alter our gene expression, illustrating we are mutable to our core, it was time for Rosalyn to collate and write up her tracts of information.

Rosalyn has written 4 books. The Times called her 1st book ‘ a work of art’, her later book on science and architecture was called ‘a manifesto on design’. Chinese Whispers [1999], Good Vibes[2001], The Room That Changes Your Brain [2013], Design is a Mind-Field [2015]. Her new in-depth book offers a practical guide on how to apply the new science for strategic design, it is due for release autumn 2017.
